Starter Motor

I replaced the starter motor. This was a reasonably straight forward job. You can access the starter mortor by removing the right rear wheel. But one trap with this job is to make sure you buy the correct part. The 66 is 12 volt and I assumed that the starter motor was also 12 volt. However it turned out that the flywheel was a 6 volt version which meant that a 6 volt starter motor was required. If in doubt as to the type of starter motor you need, remove the old one, then send a photo of the flywheel to your parts supplier. Attached are photos of the starter motor together with one of the flywheel, where the starter motor bolts onto. This is a DIY job but refer to your repair manual for directions. All up cost about $250 to $300 if I recall correctly. I might replace the flywheel eventually and put in a 12 volt starter motor, but I dont have any reason to do so at this time.
